Within k-pop, this is their signature and others, adopting the sound, frankly come across as imitators.Īt some point I’d like to see New Jeans grow or change their concept, but right now I think they have firmly established who they are as a group and have found huge success in doing so. Sure… anyone can do a 00’s r&b concept with cool electronic music genre influences but New Jeans delivers with an unsurpassed deftness. Seeing other groups attempt this style, it’s clear the members were very well selected, trained and have personally grown in the past year. New Jeans is such a well executed group, and truly talented. To me these are New Jean’s barest, simplest songs yet BUT it works! I think I love the drum n bass and rest of the production. I like how limited they are in breadth, just a couple of ideas executed with finesse. I was underwhelmed by the other b-side “New Jeans” at first listen, but “Super Shy” grew on me instantly, and now I find both tracks pretty addictive. However this release reaffirms my love for their group and solidifies their grasp of their own concept and sound. I loved the debut and “Ditto” was a huge song for me, but the imitators made me wonder if New Jeans were kinda just trend signalers. But my fandom was thrown into limbo recently, seeing the rest of the industry furiously copy New Jeans almost cheaped the concept for me. And if - like me - you were hoping for something a little more widescreen in nature, there are still a few more July releases on the horizon for the girls. If you enjoyed Ditto, you’re liable to love this. Personal taste aside, NewJeans have nailed the “signature sound” aspect I write about so often. Some airy harmonies would have worked wonders over this track. In fact, I wish the production didn’t feel so threadbare throughout - particularly the vocal arrangement. I’m sure this approach works wonders with streaming algorithms, but it doesn’t deliver the payoff I hope to hear. It’s a shame the song ends thirty seconds later, evaporated. ![]() And at about two minutes in, additional synth enters the mix to surprisingly funky effect. For what it’s attempting to do, Super Shy succeeds. We have atmospheric synths and skittery - almost weightless - percussion. We’ve got a couple ultra-catchy hooks, repeated generously. New single Super Shy fits the NewJeans template to a tee. I may be admitting to a potential lack of taste, but too often these productions strike me as the pleasant music you’d hear when waiting on the phone for customer service. But their sound is often so muted that it ends up leaving me cold. Sometimes, I even feel obliged to join the party. I understand why this group has quickly become such chart behemoths. Sometimes, I think “cool” is put at a higher premium than anything else. It fully embraced the group’s stylized worldview. That Powerpuff Girls collab was mood-setting but ephemeral. NewJeans kicked off the day with the release of an eponymous introduction track for their upcoming album.
